Meet Sophia | A Gentle Soul with a Bright Future

Sophia is 14, quiet but strong, and filled with thoughtful wisdom beyond her years. She finds peace in the pages of historical fiction and strength on hiking trails in Somerset County, PA. Her biggest dream? To become a nurse—someone who heals, because she knows what it means to hurt. She’s been in care since she was 12 and longs for stability, sibling connection, and a family who truly listens.

Sophia loves journaling, hiking, and dreams of nursing. She’s looking for a family who will support her voice, her dreams, and her bond with her younger brother.

Background:

  • Entered foster care at 12 due to family domestic violence and parental opioid use
  • Lived in kinship care briefly, now in traditional foster home
  • Separated from younger brother (placed elsewhere)
  • Mother in recovery; father incarcerated

Personality & Traits:

  • Thoughtful, observant, and introverted
  • Very nurturing — often helps with younger foster children
  • High emotional intelligence for her age
  • Needs time to build trust, but thrives in stable environments
  • Very sensitive to conflict but doesn’t show it outwardly

Likes:

  • Writing poetry and journaling
  • Country music and acoustic guitar
  • Reading (especially historical fiction and romance)
  • Loves being outdoors — hiking, camping, and animals
  • Interested in becoming a nurse someday

Dislikes:

  • Being the center of attention
  • Group therapy (prefers one-on-one)
  • Harsh discipline styles
  • Being far from her brother

Current Needs in Pennsylvania Context:

  • Foster home in her school district to preserve stability
  • Support for sibling visitation (through PA’s SWAN program)
  • Individual counseling focused on trauma and grief
  • Engagement in local extracurriculars (4H, church youth group, creative writing clubs)
  • Long-term placement with high structure and emotional support
